Committees
A committee, as understood in parliamentary law, is a body of one or more persons, elected or appointed by an assembly to consider, investigate, or take action on certain matters or subjects, or to do all these. To function effectively, a committee and its chair, should have;
- Recent copy of Directory of the names of the members on the committee.
- A statement of the powers and duties of the committee.
- Letter of Commitment from all members
- Copies of any rules, policies, or decisions of the organization, all papers or correspondence relating to the subject assigned to the committee.
- Information on the type of report desired and the date set for its presentation.
Reports from committees should minimally contain: A statement of the charge and the methods employed by the committee, a summary of information gathered, or work done & conclusion of findings, a specific recommendation & summary.
The committee chair should meet with the Vice-President that is overseeing the committee and discuss the goals of the committee. After that is accomplished, the entire committees need to meet for an orientation and to discuss the goals and objectives for the one year term. Many times, committees are not as effective as they can be simply because the Chair does not have a thorough understanding of what is necessary to run the committee. Never assume that someone knows what to do. Make sure that the committee’s goals are not overlapping into other committees’ goals. Some committees need to have an experienced Chairperson while others do not.
Our Main Common Goals should be educating, enabling and inspiring members, sustaining & increasing the membership base, implementing successful programs that address the needs of our members & community and building meaningful partnerships and alliances increasing visibility. All committees shall be responsible for establishing a budget that includes sources of revenue and a line item of expenses for any events that the committee plans to put on. This budget shall be submitted for approval of the Board of Directors before the event is planned. It is crucial that the committee stays within their budget!
We have several committees available for our members to join. Here is a list of our Committees and the Chair contacts:
